Review of The Singing Detective (2003) by Jon B — 09 Nov 2008
Interesting take on/update of the fantastic BBC drama from the '80s, with Downey Jr. in typical manic mode. Scripted by Dennis Potter (two years before his death), whose real-life story played out in the original series. Has a similar vibe/storyline to The Diving Bell & The Butterfly in perspective and paranoia. Mel Gibson is unrecognizable. I liked it, but the singing scenes didn't have the impact of the TV series, and then ending felt both flat and rushed.
Regardless, it's a fascinating concept and if you're intrigued by the film, you should run out and pick up the BBC boxset.
