Review of The Singing Detective (2003) by Elizabeth H — 12 Jan 2010
This movie started out REALLY weird and just kind of continued down that thread. I eventually caught on that the story was more about Dark getting over his psychological stuff than it was about the detective story, but that didn't really make up for the false advertisement of the cover art. The songs and lip-syncing really annoyed me too. They weren't even pretending it was their voices because it was someone else singing entirely every time...
The good things were the moments when Robert was in a fedora or a suite holding an old fashion microphone. Or when he was springing his amazing talents throughout this nutty movie in random scenes. So much of this was hard to take seriously, but at one point RDJ broke down sobbing and it was very real. He has that power.
The best part was when the credits rolled and RDJ was singing that song. LOVED IT. Made my heart stop.
Overall.. ok... weird movie. Glad I saw it. Not sure I'll watch it again.
