Review of The Singing Detective (2003) by Corey N — 26 Jan 2010
This is a small indie type film with a big name cast. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr. as a writer of detective stories sufferring from a crippling disease of the skin and bones. While he is in the hospital he goes through these delusions of living out one of his detective stories.
But his mind is trying to sort out his life. The story is odd at times but you have to keep watching to get the whole picture. Besides Downey the film has Mel Gibson, Katie Holmes, Robin Wright Penn, Adrien Brody, Carla Gugino and Jon Polito.
A great cast with solid performances from all. Downey was excellent in his role. The movie is a bit of noir, drama, comedy, adventure, mystery and musicals. A odd mix. A good movie overall but not a great film.
It seemed to be missing something for me in the story. The story may confuse some and make them want to turn it off part way in. But I would recommend anyone to watch this due to the great cast and performances.
