Review of The Silent Partner (1978) by Michael T — 08 Aug 2008
Long before Vancouver became known as "Hollywood North," Toronto had that distinction.
Back in the 1970s, the Canadian Film Tax credit helped produce a slew of "tax shelter" films which often starred a mix of Hollywood and Canuck actors. Christopher Plummer is very creepy as a psychotic bank robber who engages Elliot Gould in the game of cat-and-mouse that helps this film rise above the standard thriller. John Candy was already a member of Toronto's "Second City" troop and appearing in early episides of SCTV on an Ontario private broadcaster when he showed up playing comic relief in this movie. Toronto also plays itself rather than some generic "big city" USA location.
