Review of The Silence of the Lambs (1991) by Patrick B — 28 Sep 2012
Given that Hannibal Lecter has become such an icon of evil, it's important to remember that he's essentially a secondary character in this film--a helper to neophyte FBI profiler Clarice Starling as she tracks down the at-large serial killer Buffalo Bill.
This wasn't even Lecter's first appearance in a film--that distinction belongs to Michael Mann's underrated 1980s film "Manhunter." To me, Hannibal has always been more interesting when he's behind bars, manipulating events with a malevolent cleverness that is far scarier than when he's on the loose.
With the help of this monstrous guide into the realm of serial murder, Starling descends into the underworld and emerges as the scarred but seasoned veteran. The film that forever endeared Jodie Foster to me!
