Review of The Silence of the Lambs (1991) by Sam A — 30 Jan 2014
This film is incredible. Not only smart but well paced and amazingly acted. Silence of the Lambs is one of the most brilliant films I have ever seen. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins were both stellar (Jeremy Irons was originally slated to play the role of Hannibal which would have been amazing but Hopkins makes me completely forget about him).
Foster's contrast of strength and vulnerability is rivaled by few and Hopkins level of insanity whilst maintaining his incredible intelligence is outstanding. The building of suspense is something that Hitchcock himself would have been proud of.
The scene in which Buffalo Bill is creeping up on Foster's Clarice Starling is one of the most tense scenes I have ever witnessed and watching it I almost had a heart attack. Every time his hand reaches out to touch her and then pulls away is chillingly scary and the scenes in which Starling is interacting with Hannibal are also spine tingling.
This movie is one of three in history to win the all five major Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay) and there is a very good reason for that.
