It's perfect. It's almost a side story, the movie deviates from the tales and adventures of Hannibal Lector to focus on Lector's help in solving a copycat slasher / taxidermist (in a way) series of murders.
Lector still has his occasional moments in escaping prison and killing people in his typical cannabalic cerebral slasher fashion.
