Review of The Signal (2014) by Thomas W — 22 Sep 2014
Three college students -- Nic, Jonah and Haley-- are road-tripping across the American Southwest as they find themselves corresponding with a computer hacker named Nomad via their laptops telling them where to go and when to do it etc as they are searching for a secret/lost signal somewhere in the American desert.
They believe that they are communicating with someone of importance but are uncertain as to how much Nomad can be trusted ... as the three of them argue whether or not they should continue their journey to something ultimately unknown! Things take a bizarrely eerie turn when they are asked to turn off of a main road and drive into a "dead zone" which is emitting "the signal" both them and Nomad had been tracking .
.. which they do! Everything goes dark (!!) and the young adults frantically search for one another as each has apparently disappeared and are nowhere to be found ... until Nic (Brenton Thwaites - The Giver) awakens and finds himself lying paralyzed in a hospital bed which he is unable to explain.
A man named Damon (Laurence Fishburne - Event Horizon) is there to help him and explain to him that he is working for the government and they, too, have tracked a "signal" and are trying to find its source.
Nic's questions are not adequately answered and he soon believes himself to be living in a nightmare brought about by the signal ...
