Review of The Signal (2014) by Leon B — 11 Apr 2015
Review:
I really didn't enjoy this film because I didn't have a clue what was going on. Basically a couple of teenagers follow a hack on a computer which leads them to a mysterious place. After getting separated from each other, the main character tries to find his friends, whilst planning an escape route to get back home. The whole film was a mystery and the director wasted to much time on pointless scenes which just became annoying. There is never a real explanation why they are in this weird facility and why they can't go home, so the whole film seemed quite pointless. If they had all of this technology, I don't know why they just couldn't erase the kids memories and send them back were they came from. Anyway, Fishburne does come across some aliens on the island, which was also unexplained, so that just made the plot even worse. I honestly don't know what the director was trying to achieve with this project because there isn't a moral or point to the story. Basically I just found it frustrating and a complete waste of time and money. Rubbish!
Round-Up:
Laurence Fishburne's career has taken a slump lately, with movies like the Colony and the awful Predators remake and this movie certainly didn't help. Due to bad choices, he really needs a good film to bring his career back to the glorious days of the first Matrix. Anyway, the main character, played by Brenton Thwaites has been in movies like the Giver, Maleficent and Oculus but I honestly can't remember him in these movies. Most of these teenagers that star in these movies lately, lack screen charisma and originality so it's not surprising that I couldn't remember his face. In all, I was very disappointed with this film and the whole "out in the wilderness" aspect, became boring and uninteresting after a while.
Budget: $4million.
Worldwide Gross: $2million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their sci-fi thrillers about 3 computer geniuses who end up in a mysterious facility after following a hack on there computer. 2/10.
