Review of The Shop Around the Corner (1940) by Lisa J — 31 Dec 2010
James Stewart in a film set at Christmas time? No it's the other one and Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 film is better than Capra's. The plot centers on a shop and it's staff in Hungary (if you worry that the cast speak English with American or stereotypically 'Jewish' accents you won't get past the first reel) and the relationships therein.
One of the tightest acting ensembles on celluloid, the language of the script as well as lubitsch's masterful mise-en-scene mean there is no waste on show. Not sickly sweet like alot of comedy melodramas of the time but certainly a feelgood movie all the same.
