Three things: a great story, great direction, and great people. This is one of the most perfect romances ever, absolutely timeless. We laughed, and we were shocked at times, and even though my son is "too tough to cry", I shed a sentimental tear or two watching this love unfold.

Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan are incredibly beautiful to watch in love, but almost upstaged by a great ensemble group of players. Lubitsch, always smooth and scintillating, even in 1940 was able to maintain suggestiveness.

In the earlier era of the late 20s early 30s he was sexually playful, and that kind of sauciness is absent here, for the most part, but the warmth and love of humanity that characterizes all his films is here in full abundance.

So too is the wonderful chemistry between the players, and the film oozes enough romance to make anyone's heart ache with affection. If you love love, this is one of the most romantic movies you will ever see.
