Review of The Shootist (1976) by Ian B — 27 Aug 2013
I never thought I'd ever, ever, ever say this, but John Wayne's performance in this film is astonishingly good for The Duke. He's full of watery-blue-eyed sympathy, an aging legend crumbling away from cancer yet demanding dignity to accompany him through the end of his days.
The ending was problematic as it seemed like violent filler, a desperate attempt to have the Duke go out with a cacophony of misfired or shoulder-darting bullets.
