Review of The Shining (1980) by Nguyen Thuy H — 31 Oct 2013
Personally, I think this is a more effective commentary on American gender and racial politics than, I don't know, To Kill A Mockingbird. But being a Kubrick film, of course, The Shining is more concerned about the failure of men rather than the strength of other parties.
And if you are fond of Kubrick, you probably enjoy the over-dramatic effect that is blatantly on display here. But if in Eyes Wide Shut, this effect is supported by a very entertaining script, here, the humor is not discovered until the very last portion of the film.
So basically, for more than one hour or so, it's being over-dramatic for the sake of being over-dramatic.
