One of the best horror movies of all time. Even after nearly 30 years it stands up as a standout in the genre. Which isn't.
Easy. This was Kubrick's only attempt at the genre, and I'm glad he decided to get it ago. Yes, Jack Nicholson overacts, and yes Shelly Duvall is annoying... But it feels like this was done on purpose. I guess it's because they're is little beautiful about this film. Even the colors of the rooms are horrible and a strain on the eyes. The worst part is obviously the disintegration of a family.
I understand that this movie isn't for everyone. I can picture that it probably doesn't impress a younger crowd that has come to expect lots of gore or CGI in horror films. But for us older school people, this will always be one the greatest horror films ever. Sad to say films don't come like this anymore.
