Review of The Shining (1980) by Dan G — 08 Dec 2013
Maybe it's the desensitization of 2013 movie-watching but I found The Shining to be incredibly long and tidious, with very little suspense and very little horror. After watching Kubrick adaptations such A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey, I was also a bit skeptical of watching this straight-forward horror film.
Having never read Stephen King's book I can only comment on the story on screen, and I have to scratch my head on the logistics of a man dragging his whole family to a secluded hotel, knowing a murder happened there and knowing that it'd be hard to contact civilation once the snow falls.
That said, Jack Nicholson's character was uninteresting to me, his wife was incredibly wide-eyed and scared constantly (annoying) and the kid was just weird.
