Review of The Shining (1980) by Jean-Antoine B — 10 May 2014
The fact that it's one of Kubrick's best goes without saying. My third favorite Stephen King adaptation and no one but Kubrick could have directed it. Those things being said however, one thing that irked me was the ending.
Not the picture with Nicholson in it from 1921. The scenes like the bear blow-job scene and the elevator full of blood. These scenes, too me, come out of nowhere and have no real build up of suspense at all.
This makes them come off as more "WTF?!" than actually being scary. Maybe Kubrick put them there to be interpreted like other scenes from his films, but it didn't come off that way to me.
That aside, it is still very creepy and definitely worth your time.
