Review of The Shining (1980) by Cris E — 30 Dec 2014
I had large expectations for the film from everything I've heard over the years. In preparation for it, I even finished the book to contrast the two. First of all, everything about the Shining is typical Kubrick style gorgeous, but I have to argue that story lacked buildup to Jack Torrance's descent.
Perhaps it is because this is the focus of the novel, the movie feels very lacking in explaining Jack's mental unstableness. I have to say Jack Nicholson really shines in the movie, and does a brilliant job even though he is not the Jack I have in mind when I was reading the book.
Shelley Duvall is chillingly good as well, being the helpless wife with her constant nagging. I for one enjoy the changes Kubrick made to the storyline which makes sense of the movie, but I question some of the motifs Kubrick chose to include in the film as it doesn't fit entirely well and feels forced.
Regardless, The Shining is able to evoke a sense of unease with its brilliant acting and mood setting, and is a beautiful film.
