Review of The Sheltering Sky (1990) by Missy D — 05 Jun 2008
At the core of this film there is a question about human's shelter. Where we can find our true refuge in this threatening world? The American couple flee from NY with this implicit idea that civilisation is a prision for their creativity, perception and sentiment.
In the Africa, under the shelter of sky there seems to be a sort of security. However, it soon turnes out that there is no shelter from depression, disorientation and death. What I love about this film is that the characters don't go back to the starting point, to where they first escape from.
Rather, they fuse with African life and keep their hearts open for new perceptions.
