Review of The Sheltering Sky (1990) by Darwin F — 11 Oct 2008
A masterpiece at almost every level. Mark Peploe's adaptation perfectly plots this complex narrative of an American couple losing their way in the Sahara (and makes highly original use of Paul Bowles as narrator).
Bertolucci's precise control of mise-en-scene and Vittoro Storaro's beautiful cinematography add depth to the fine performances of Debra Winger and John Malkovich in the lead roles. (Timothy Spall also makes short, but memorable appearances throughout).
I highly recommend it.
