Review of The Shawshank Redemption (1994) by Nate W — 16 Mar 2014
Perhaps the most emotionally satisfying film ever made, "The Shawshank Redemption" has earned its status as an iconic piece of American pulp cinema. Frank Darabont's brilliant adaptation of Stephen King's novella is fashioned to get better upon repeat viewings, not just because of the climactic twist, but because of the selectivity of his character exposition.
His cast is a masterful collection, including Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Bob Gunton, and James Whitmore, all of whom give career-best performances. Darabont's articulate retrospective commentary on the 10th Anniversary DVD is a must-hear for fans of the film.
It provides levity and insight into the making of the film, highlighting the underappreciated efforts of his art department, the painterly composition of Roger Deakins, and the subtleties of the exemplary sound mix.
