Review of The Shawshank Redemption (1994) by Nikol K — 20 Aug 2016
A beautiful, perfectly cast, emotionally driven masterpiece. Instead of being a tale of despair, it is a story of a beautiful friendship. Robbins gives a smug, dry performance but still can be delightfully sweet and emotional, working off of freeman perfectly.
And freeman. What can be said about freeman that has not been said? He is the perfect narrator to bring Steven Kings classic story to wonderful life. This might just be his best performance as the 'man who can get things', Red.
The movies strongest point is it's realistic portrayal of prison life. This includes rape, suicide and the need to remain in prison. No other prison movie has portrayed the want to stay in prison.
Because, the truth is, when people are out of prison, they don't know what to do. They can either cope, kill themselves or do something so terrible that they stay right where they are. With wonderful performances, beautiful emotional moments and a shockingly realistic look at prison life this movie is perfect.
This movie is considered one of the best, and rightfully so.
