The Shawshank Redemption is entirely and genuinely amazing. Everything works. A first-rate prison drama. Shawshank boasts two flawless performances from its lead actors, cementing your emotional investment in the two compelling lead characters.
Shawshank is rough around the edges and uncompromising in its portrayal of prison, yet manages to entertain through its slow, clever story. Shawshank's driving theme of hope makes for both a spiritually uplifting and tense spectacle, with an eventual poetically satisfying ending.
I maintain this is NOT an overrated film; it's one of the best ever made.
