Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by David D — 16 Jun 2018
Didn't hate it, but certainly didn't love it. It was a predictable film that came up short visually. I thought there was a lot of potential visually, and in some scenes, it met those expectations; however, the sets were obvious, it was too tonal and dark, when some light could have added contrast.
I know Del Toro was trying to make it tonal to match the creature's environment, but it felt forced in a bad way. Although it was predictable, I enjoyed the story, along with the ending. Sally Hawkins did a phenomenal job, and it was easy to fall in love with her character.
Michael Shannon always plays a good protagonist, and Michael Stuhlbarg performed well as a man teetering the lines.
