Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Christopher B — 24 Feb 2018
Guillermo del Toro has come close to perfecting his own style that can be seen in most of his movies to date; stylistic historical fantasy put together with a classic but refreshing structure. However no matter how close it comes to perfection, it's a style I've never been too big of a fan of.
The Shape of Water, among his other films, all feel like they're promising something that could really immerse us and give an emotional experience, but come out feeling it hasn't quite got there (at times it gets very close, the story surrounding Giles almost made me wanting it as a movie of its own).
It's definitely worth a watch, but confirms that del Toro's style isn't wasted potential but a choice I just can't get into.
