Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Matthew R — 21 Apr 2018
The Shape of Water - 4 out of 5 - The Shape of Water is directed by Guillermo del Toro. It stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer. Set in Baltimore in 1962, the story follows a mute custodian at a high-security government laboratory who falls in love with a captured humanoid amphibian creature. This won the Oscar for Best Picture this year.
Now I loved this movie but it felt predictable yet still captivating. It brought a lot of thoughts of the film Amélie but just added a fish man. Also the creature itself looks almost exactly like Abe from Hellboy and this could just be because they were both directed by del Toro. Also Doug Jones the actor in the suit was both characters. So that might explain some of the similarities.
The Shape of Water received 13 nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, the most of any film in the 2018 race. It won in four categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
There is some sexual stuff in this film along with nudity so if that bothers you; you may want to skip this film. But if your open to Fantasy drama Sci-fi love story then you must watch this film the cast does a beautiful job telling this story and it just draws you in. I'm not sure if its worth a rewatch but maybe rent it first and if you really love it then buy it. If you have a chance to catch it in theaters still go see it there I'm sure its beautiful on the big screen.
