Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Cory D — 25 Apr 2018
Once again, the awards and the RT affection are grossly overdone with regard to this film. This peculiar combination of fairy tale, science fiction and child-like dream has its charms as long as you don't expect realism, logic or deep characters.
The visuals are absolutely gorgeous--everything from the set design to lighting to cinematography. The story itself is rather cartoonish or dated morality tale with good versus evil playing out through a fantastical scene and set of events centering around a mute cleaning woman and her offbeat romance with a supernatural creature from the Amazon.
The creature is being kept captive by a truly despicable government operative of some kind who answers to a military general who is just as morally corrupt. But fear not, good eventually triumphs over evil in a somewhat unexpected way.
Again, it's a fairy tale of a rather simplistic kind, the performances are generally good within that sort of genre, and the visuals make the whole thing work when otherwise it would collapse from the weight of naive fantasy.
