Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Eric L — 12 Feb 2018
Del Toro's latest dark fantasy boasts an excellent cast, orchestrated by a rhythmic feel from start to finish. Sally Hawkins perfectly exudes emotion, despite her character being mute. Her performance is backed by solid turns from Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Jenkins, and an impressively dark ambiance from Michael Shannon.
A complex and moving score, as well as immersive production design make the fairytale more of a vintage love story with added flare. With the complexity of characters and style, "The Shape of Water" falls only slightly short of perfection with an underdeveloped storyline shared between the two leading lovers.
