Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Wael — 18 Jan 2018
"The Shape of Water" is what happens when you apply an excellent artistic take to a compelling peculiar premise (like, let's say... a mute woman falling for a weird amphibian creature). It tells the story of what happens when two creatures find common comfort in their undermined and misunderstood nature.
The direction is excellent, the score fits the atmosphere of the film so well, and the characters are very poignant, evoking so many feelings and thoughts (even though the main two don't even say a single word the whole movie).
The water is used for a lot of symbolism, like love (when they swim together in her flooded bathroom), erotica (the masturbation scenes and how well they fit with the boiling eggs), and salvation (when he brings her back from the dead and turns the scars on her neck to gills).
In conclusion, this film was a true artful visual treat. Would totally recommend.
