Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Louis L — 18 Jan 2018
Very unique and enjoyable, Del Toro provides something strange and special at the same time.
The setting is beautifully gloomy and makes me wish for rain.
Compassion is what drives this narrative with romance being the developing theme that manifests with grace.
This film is thought provoking in many ways and makes you shake your head with a chuckle at times. The humor is well placed and just present enough to give this movie a lovely charm that enhances the Cold War era setting.
Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer shine as the supporting cast that acts as the broadcasters for Sally Hawkin's, who's character is mute. The emotions are raw and sincere in Dawkin's relationship with the rest of the cast.
Additionally its hard not to enjoy the resemblance our amphibious friend has to Abe Sapien from Hellboy. While this movie provides a small amount of continuity to the comic book adaptation, it is not a prequel by any means nor does it provide any true connection to the Hellboy franchise.
