Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Steve H — 22 Dec 2017

This movie is simply beautiful and irresistibly charming. The events take place during the cold war and during this time the main characters struggle fitting into the society. It wasn't until they got together and bonded that they found a purpose and a place of belonging.

The production is absolutely stunning. Vivid colors are constant throughout the film and camera angles help capture the intense moments and props throughout the film, such as Zelda (played by Octavia Spencer) brushing a giant machine equipment, reminding you how ridiculous of a world they are in. Also, another lovely touch to the film is the music. Del Toro adds a flavor of musical to the film to help add charm to Elise and Amphibian man's relationship. It's a lovely and warm addition to an intense and romance film that helps relieve some of the drama.

The idea of two mute characters starring in a romance film sounds uninteresting, but The Shape of Water had me on the edge of my seat during the intense scenes while smiling at the light hearted scenes showcasing Elise's (played by Sally Hawkins) innocence, curiosity and empathy.
