Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Miguel D — 18 Dec 2017
The Shape of Water is an excellent experience, a weird one, but a wonderful one. The movie totally worked with me. The performance of Michael Shannon is stellar. I would not be surprised he will win some prizes thanks to this movie.
But I have to warn you that this masterpiece is not for everybody. Some people might not be able to look past the weirdness. They might be stuck with what looks like bestiality, especially if you can be easily blinded by religious indoctrination.
.. I also have to warn you that people called it the or one of "the best movie of they year". This is misleading. Yes, Guillermo del Toro is a real artist and his magic totally works on me. But one has to be fair, The Shape of Water is only a weird and modern version of Othello.
There is nothing original with the main story. What is fantastic is the staging. And on that aspect, Guillermo del Toro is a master artist and I would love to drawn in his imagination.
