Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Kirsten B — 19 Dec 2017
Got to see this at a screening and just wow.
I was a little shocked by the nudity, not that it was gratuitous, but that it seemed so natural, as in, well of course she takes a bath naked sort of thing.
It was also graphic in the violence, but again, not gratuitous. Like, well, of course, he'd shoot that guy and there'd be blood. Well, duh.
It was beautifully made with very 60's styling and color. And oddly, with the #MeToo movement, the scene where a cleaning woman (janitor) is sexually harassed by her married boss was just so now, then and always for many working women. how this powerful man treats and dehumanizes really is where the storytelling was at it's best. Their love story is small potatoes to the misery and demagoguery of several of the male characters. Seems like the main theme is man's inhumanity to man and how we can have small victories and can live our lives in-spite of that inhumanity.
