Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Bald K — 19 Oct 2018
I just finished watching THE SHAPE OF WATER. I liked it quite a bit. The filmed moved me. SHAPE is a movie about loners and outsiders. It's an unusual love story (kind of an Adult take on Beauty and the Beast meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon).
The film is also a tribute to Del Toro's love of films in general. Two of the main characters live above a beautiful old movie house called The Orpheum. So, as a rabid film lover myself this movie automatically had my heart!
The film is simply gorgeous to look at with a stunning performance from the always wonderful Sally Hawkins along with great performances from Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Stuhlbarg (who is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors...how did this man not receive an Oscar nomination? He gave so many fine supporting performances this year).
Michael Shannon is the main villain (a role he can do in his sleep).
Do I think THE SHAPE OF WATER was the Best Picture of the Year... no. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME still gets my vote for the Best Picture of the year.
However, This movie makes my list as one of the the top five best pictures of the year.
