Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Aaron K — 25 Aug 2018
Visually masterful, as you'd expect from a Del Torro movie. The lighting, direction, sets and textures set the tone of this Cold War drama right from the start. To describe the story sounds silly; a monster story that is reversed, switching the typical "monster abducts glamour model" into a "woman loves and rescues monster" from a US government facility.
If you're into arthouse movies, dressed up with blockbuster level production, you'll love this expertly present fantasy movie. If you're bothered or embarrassed or put-off by sex, adult themes, violence, homosexuality or matters of the heart, this movie is not for you.
You'd be missing the point by a wide mark, however. This is fantasy movie is the perfect opportunity to experience escapism for the forgotten creatures of this world. Sometimes, the core of the store is greater than the substance of its parts.
A love story, from start to finish.
