Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Tor M — 17 Jul 2018
Guillermo del Toro is back with a very interesting tale that mixes fantasy with reality with the perfect portioning.
Some lab has taken a creature imprisioned. It's half fish half human and it's truly something special. Our lead, a mute lady, is working as a cleaner at the lab but she connects with this creature. They're friendship is not to be destroyed, even when stuff gets rough.
This is a visual treat, supported by a great, crafted score and solid performances. The casting is incredible with Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer that all fill they're roles to the maximum.
I found it to be very similiar to "AmeliƩ", but there are other films that seem close. "The Lure" meets, "E.T." in a atmospheric 60's setting.
Thematically rich and a lovely pace and drive. It's sweet but violent, raw and beautiful. It's nasty and even creepy, but never scary. Love conquers all, I guess.
7.5 out of 10 green candies.
