Review of The Shape of Things (2003) by Maisie M — 19 Aug 2012
"Moralists have no place in an art gallery," reads a quote from Han Suyin in Evelyn's installation.
This film is a shocking commentary on what art is, and where morality sits beside that art. For Evelyn, morality in art is not merely plastered fig leaves on penises. It is "the shaping of the flesh and the will".
And while the movie drops hints as to what this is all about (references to Shaw's Pygmalion and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), we never really fully prepare ourselves for that ending.
