Review of The Shallows (2016) by Eric V — 14 Jul 2016
This shark film is filmed well, and has some great scenes. But I can't rate it high like many "real" critics because I can't ignore how much this film ignores real-life behavior of sharks in order to prolong its story.
Sharks are not psycho killers waiting to attack their intended victim...or anyone that gets in its way. And that's how the film sets up its shark so that it won't leave poor Nancy alone. Add to that a backstory of her mother that is never explained.
Ugh. Mysterious backstory just makes your film pretensious and "indie" cool, but if it has no purpose to your story, then it HAS NO PURPOSE.
