When you see the RT score for this movie you should take into account that this is the type of movies critics love to hate, so its very high. I think the biggest strength of this film is the writing. Other filmmakers could take a lesson on limited storytelling from "the shallows".
It keeps us in the same place in the same situation but uses all of its environment so it never feels boring. Blake lively proves shes is more then just a hot body by carrying this film, it lives on her performance.
There is some great tension and scares that are earned and not cheep. A really clever ending you wont see coming followed by the weakest part: an unnecessary post script sequence.
