Review of The Shallows (2016) by Jamess — 27 Sep 2016
I'm bumping an extra point for the gorgeous cinematography and location work. Jaume Collet-Serra's films always looked good, but the location and underwater scenes looked spectacular. And it's nice to see a movie that's small in scale, in contrast to the 200 million dollar summer behemoths.
It has a nice sense of space and distance, and barely leaves Lively's side. The movie is from her viewpoint and rarely leaves the water to cutaway to other characters. The early build up worked well, and it wasn't until the flare hit the whale fat that I thought, well.
..here we go. It's not another Jaws, but then it's not another Shark Night.
