I remember my parents gave my sister and I the option to either watch Shaggy Dog in theatres, or rent Empire Strikes Back on DVD. My sister wanted to see Shaggy Dog, so we went to see that. She realized her mistake.
Tim Allen is a great actor, but I don't think he gave it his all in the movie. The dog was acting better than he was. The plot was jumping all over. And seeing Tim Allen chase a cat around was more scary than it was funny.
Overall, I didn't like it.
