Review of The Shack (2017) by Tom T — 02 Jun 2017
Decide What You Want.
This movie suffers from the poor direction and editing. Worthington's performance is uneven and a mumbling confused presence. Because his character is supposed to carry the movie that is a problem.
The first third is choppy. Octavia Spencer and Graham Greene do as much as they can, but the other 'Godly ' performers are lukewarm at best. The spiritual epiphany is muddy because of these flawed performances.
So why 3 stars?
Because Worthington and Spencer do provide gravitas and the message is very good. Nonbelievers will deride the flaws and write off the movie because of them. The point, blunted by the director, for me made watching it worthwhile.
Give it a shot, and open your mind.
