Review of The Seventh Sign (1988) by Bill B — 16 Dec 2008
The priest character who seems to want to help at the beginning is not really a priest. He is a Roman centurion who has lived since the time of Christ and wants the world to end so his life can finally end.
Jurgen Prochnow who plays a creepy wanderer at the beginning who seems to be bringing destruction all across the world is really Jesus Christ who has quietly come back to bring God's judgment on the world.
Demi Moore and her husband character are having a baby and she begins to fear her baby will be the seventh sign, born without a soul and the final sign of the end of the earth. She enlists the help of a nerdy Jewish kid to translate some Hebrew manuscripts and then later to research some passages in the Bible as she struggles to prevent armagedeon.
The point of this movie, the lesson, is that the first thing Demi can do to prevent the end of the world is stop the death sentence from being carried out on a mentally challenged young man who murdered his parents because he believed it was God's will.
Because if the Bible is true and the end of the world will come as scripture says it will, then people who kill in the name of God are of course doing the right thing and shouldn't be punished. Then when stopping that fails and it looks like Demi's baby will be born dead, the final message is that she realizes she must sacrifice her own life so that her baby can have life, souls will be replenished in heaven, and therefore the world can go on.
