Review of The Seven Year Itch (1955) by Matt F — 16 Apr 2012
Marilyn Monroe has some of her most memorable scenes in this film. Monroe is very charismatic and enchanting, her character as the girl upstairs, is a supporting character but steals the movie. Sadly, Tom Ewell's performance is very weak as a lead, full of forced and over exaggerated reactions and mannerisms.
Ewell's character Richard Sherman is just not likable, he's too corky and just too much of an oddball attempting the portrayal of a frustrated married man. The film fails to make Sherman a more challenging character for a more interesting and balanced exchange w/ Monroe's character.
Because the story is centered solely on the character, Richard Sherman, it gets boring fairly quickly. Fans of slapstick humor can appreciate Tom Ewell's performance even though it seems out of place for this film.
