Review of The Sessions (2012) by Jeffrey C — 04 Aug 2013
I was quite surprised by the tone of this. It is not melodramatic at all, and is funnier than it is moving- and that is not a bad thing. Everything felt human- the comedic elements were down to the natural human interactions that occurred. It was never cheap humour- it all felt natural.
And then when things turned serious, and more emotional, I felt more attached to the characters, as it felt genuine. This movie had so much buzz around Helen Hunt, but John Hawkes was definitely the best part of this, and should have got a nomination at this year's awards. His portrayal was so honest and heartfelt, but also humorous, that the character wasn't just a dramatic performance. but a real person.
The film itself is on quite a small scale, and is mostly a performance driven movie, so it is not a film that will make a difference to people's lives in the grand scope of things, but it is a film that will make you think for a little time afterwards. And the one thing that should be remembered is John Hawkes. For it is quite the performance.
