Review of The Sessions (2012) by Joey S — 02 Nov 2013
The Sessions is a mature, moving, and very funny drama featuring wonderful performances from John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, and (in a supporting role) William H. Macy. John Hawkes stars as Mark O'Brien, a journalist and poet who suffers from polio and travels around in an iron lung, but who would like to finally lose his virginity.
Although it's permeated with funny moments and an unceasing sense of optimism, it never makes light of its O'Brien's unfortunate condition. You're always laughing with him not at him, and John Hawkes instills O'Brien with incredible charm and warmth.
The Sessions is the kind of movie that sounds like shameless Oscar bait, but in reality is much more genuine than that. The drama and emotion in the fairly unsentimental movie is all real, and it's just an all around enjoyable and heartwarming story.
