Review of The Sessions (2012) by Mikey O — 25 Mar 2013
A movie (based on a true story) that seems to be driven by sex, subtly transcends into a tale of optimism and broken people coming to the grips of life with one another. It is possibly the most sexually graphic movie of the year, but somehow it is not "naughty" because of the way it is presented through it's delicate characters and the astounding performances by Helen Hunt & John Hawkes.
I really had thought that Helen Hunt had ruined her career after winning an Oscar in 1997 for "As Good As It Gets". But here she is, 15 years later, with a lovely, poignant Oscar-nominated performance that solidifies her stature in cinema history, I admired how BOLD & BRAVE Hunt was in baring her body (along with her soul) in this movie.
She looks better than ever, and I can't remember a real actress doing more nudity than she did here. It's the full package and it's raw, real, and completely uninhibited. Beautiful film that portrays its fragile characters in inspiring ways.
Highly recommended, one of the year's best!
