Review of The Servant (1963) by Alyssa N — 03 Jan 2011
More proof that novellas make the best movie adaptations. Rather than excessively cutting it down, the screenwriter is instead free to embellish the story and characters even beyond what the author did.
It has a lot to say about class relations, and you could easily read a social commentary into it, but I think itâ(TM)s far more interesting as a psychological drama about these specific (and twisted) characters and situation.
If the extremes it presents donâ(TM)t always seem probable, itâ(TM)s still fascinating to ask ourselves, âWhat if?â?
