Review of The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) by Cameron R — 04 Apr 2008
This movie should be amazing, it really should be, the story is very intersting (based on factual events) the directing is pretty good (Wes Craven is a good director, but I don't know if he was quite up to snuff for directing in exotic locations yet) and alot of the imagery is very grabbing (some of those dream sequences are just awsome).
But there's just something about the film that feels off. It might be the fact that these were real events (based on a book by an Anthropologist) but was made into a horror film, when it feels like it really could have been made into something else.
Not to say the horror shouldn't be there, but at times (especially the last ten minutes) the horror feels like "hollywood" horror on top of "real world" horror. An interesting film with alot to like, and worth a viewing, and even a buy if you find it used or cheap, but not as awesome as I had hopped.
