Review of The September Issue (2009) by Dino W — 20 Aug 2009
It's impossible not to think of Meryl Streep's dramatised version of Anna Wintour while watching the real one in action in The September Issue: that barely concealed impatience for others bristling under the austere surface, the tight, uncomfortable smile, the permanent cup of Starbucks in her hand.
Its also impossible to take seriously the real life fashion cliches walking around in this film, sprouting lines like "the jacket is the new coat". Hilarious. Indeed, Wintour herself resents that her highly prestigious career is viewed so flippantly by her family and others.
The unsung hero in all this though is Vogue's creative designer, Grace Coddington. She has a real eye for what looks good and seems to be the heart and soul of the magazine and the best reason to see The September Issue.
