Review of The September Issue (2009) by Manny C — 26 Sep 2009
Vogue editor Anna Wintour is so revered as a literal devil that even Meryl Streep was wary of emulating her too faithfully in the Devil Wears Prada. This documentary, from director R.J. Cutler, goes a little deeper to try and see what makes this ice queen tic.
He barely succeeds at that, in this doc that chronicles the blood, sweat and tears Wintour and her staff put into creating the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine. Even starlets like Sienna Miller shake in her presence.
The movie is fascinating, and since it was shot pre-recession, we get to see the filthy rich enjoy their pampered lives.
Wintour is upstaged though by her partner in crime Grace Coddington, a former model now turned Vogue's creative director. The back and forths between the two are delicious.
